| The philosophy of the West Custer County Library District is to encourage life-long learning and to provide resources to help people of all ages in their quest for knowledge, leisure and problem solving, as well as to promote history, culture and a free exchange of ideas among the diverse users of our library.
Although located in a small, rural community, the library reaches out to the broader world through an expanding network of advanced technology to accomplish it’s goals, to meet the growing needs of the public at large, and to enhance the quality of life for those in Custer County.

| The Library is open 34 hours/week, and is currently run by a full time director and 4 other part time staff, a total of 3 FTE. The Library serves 3,318 patrons by providing 11,899 items in its collection, and by offering an array of services. The Community Room is available for community use, often at no cost. The summer reading program brings in over 100 kids each summer and provides programs and prizes. The Chautauqua Series offers free educational and historical programs, and the Library sponsors a Chess Club, a Writer’s Group, and a Book Club. At least once a year, beginning Internet courses are taught. A special reading magnifier provides service for those with low vision, and the building and services are equipped for the disabled.
