The Custer County Sheriff’s Office is the only law enforcement agency in Custer County. The agency is staffed 24 hours 7 days a week with 6 dispatchers, 6 detention officers and 11 deputies including the Sheriff and Undersheriff. Sheriff Shannon Byerly has a posse made up of 25 volunteers’ that work special events and school activities. The Sheriff’s Office dispatches for the Fire Departments and EMS services in addition to the Sheriff’s Office calls. The Sheriff’s Office conducts routine patrols throughout the county, enforces state laws and county and town ordinances. Additionally, they perform house watches, process civil documents, and are charged with court house security. The office runs the county jail and is also responsible for prisoner extraditions and the preparation of over 10,000 meals per year for the inmates. The Sheriff’s Office investigates an average of 200 traffic accidents per year and monitors traffic and issues traffic tickets in addition to investigating all criminal complaints in Custer County, Westcliffe, Silver Cliff, Wetmore, and San Isabel.
