To preserve the significant open lands and natural heritage of Colorado through private and public partnerships, innovative land conservation techniques and strategic leadership.
In 2021, San Isabel Land Protection Trust formally joined Colorado Open Lands. San Isabel had been operating to protect land, water, and wildlife in the Wet Mountain Valley and beyond for twenty-five years. Colorado Open Lands operates at the statewide scale, having led the protection of over 600,000 acres of the best land and water of Colorado.
In Custer County, Colorado Open Lands now stewards over 80 distinct properties with conservation easements, permanently protecting over 27,000 acres. Our work safeguards our natural bounty – the scenic vistas and wildlife we enjoy from our homes, and the ranching community we all revel in – by helping landowners limit rampant development that risks our precious water resources, open space and rural character.
